Although it was not really a replacement for the 968 coupe and convertible, it allowed Porsche to survive. This car shares some of it's major components with the more powerfull 911 (type 996), but still has it's own characteristics.

In 2003 it underwent a slight facelift, but the 2005 model is a "totally new car" according to Porsche. For 2009 it received another facelift, and models are available in 1/43rd scale by Schuco and in 1/18th by Norev.

A completely new version (type 981) was released in 2014, and models are available in 1/43rd and 1/18th scale by Minichamps. A GTS version was released in 1:43 scale by Minichamps as well.

For 2016, this model is renamed the 718 Boxster (type 981), and is available in 1/43rd & 1/18th scale by Spark and Minichamps.
